New to study abroad at Iowa State? You're in the right place. Here's what you need to know — and what to do next.
Need to know:
Program types & durations
Iowa State offers two types of programs. Faculty-led programs travel with an ISU professor and a group of students — typically short-term, over semester breaks. Partner programs let you attend another institution during a semester, summer, or winter session and transfer credits back. Think about what fits you best: first-time travelers often appreciate the structure of a faculty-led program, while students seeking full immersion may prefer a partner program.

When to go
Partner programs often work well during the sophomore year — you have more course flexibility, can break an ISU housing contract without a fee, and still have time for campus events (career fairs), and campus leadership before graduation. Most partner programs run annually, so timing is flexible. Faculty-led programs vary; some run every year, others every 2–3 years or just once. Ask your study abroad advisor how often your program of interest runs.
Cost
Study abroad can be more affordable than you may think. A shorter program isn't always cheaper when you look at the full picture. A semester abroad can often replace a semester in Ames — meaning your total degree cost stays similar. Think in terms of cost per day and cost of your full degree, not just the program fee.

What to do:
Everyone has to
- Get a passport — U.S. passports (age 16+) are valid for 10 years. Don't wait to apply!
- Research study abroad programs online to see what Iowa State offers.
- Check visa requirements — they depend on your program and citizenship. Your study abroad advisor can help.
It's a good idea to
- Attend a Study Abroad Fair to explore programs and talk to advisors and returned students.
- Meet with a study abroad advisor. Advisors are in every college and in the Study Abroad Center. Once you've applied to a program, a meeting is often required. [New to scheduling? Use Navigate.]
- Contact the Office of Student Financial Aid with questions about how your aid will be packaged for your study abroad program.
