Study Abroad and Exchange Advisory Committee
The Study Abroad and Exchange Advisory Committee is responsible for promoting and approving quality learning abroad/study abroad programs through consultation, review, funding, and advocacy. The committee works collaboratively with academic colleges and departments to fulfill these responsibilities.
Role and Scope
Believing in the power of learning abroad to transform lives, to increase understanding of the world, and to intellectually challenge participants, the Committee will continue to investigate the means to increase participation in study abroad and recognition of faculty and staff who lead these programs.
The Committee is charged by the Office of the Provost to approve all ISU-sponsored group learning abroad programs for which students earn ISU credit as well as all other ISU-sponsored group learning programs. It is expected that appropriate review of the academic elements of all programs that are proposed for consideration by the Committee will have occurred at the college level prior to submission to the Committee. College level approval of the proposed program shall be documented in the proposal.
The Committee’s goal is to ensure the academic integrity of these programs as well as the safety of students, faculty, and staff. To further this goal, Committee members assist colleagues in the preparation of program proposals, and the Committee regularly sponsors workshops for new and experienced program directors.
The provision of quality learning abroad programs involves preparation and knowledge of conditions at target sites and host countries. To this end, the Committee provides and disburses funds to assist with the cost of site visits to develop new programs or to enhance existing ones. The Committee also provides Program Director Grants to offset program director costs (airfare, room and board) that would otherwise be passed on to program participants.
Membership
Committee members include representatives of each college, appointed by their respective Deans because of their experience with issues and logistics of taking students abroad, two at-large faculty members appointed by the Associate Provost for Academic Programs, as well as representatives from the Study Abroad Center and two graduate students appointed by the Graduate Student Senate. College representatives and at-large faculty members shall be appointed for three year terms with the possibility of reappointment.
