Tec de Monterrey - ISU Exchange
Iowa State University (ISU) offers an exchange program, including a summer intensive Spanish program, at Tecnológico de Monterrey/ITESM. The main campus, located in Monterrey, has six branch campuses that provide for international students in the most important cities in Mexico: Cuernavaca, Guadalajara, Mazatlán, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, and Toluca. Each campus has programs in intensive language and culture. All campuses are open for regular credit courses taught in Spanish. Some courses may be available in English.
Since its founding in 1943, Tec/ITESM has been dedicated to preparing students for careers in business, engineering, computer science, and the sciences and humanities.
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) in the United States accredits Tecnológico de Monterrey, and it is considered one of the best private universities in Latin America.
Annual enrollment is about 80,000 students spread throughout 30 Mexican cities.
The seven Tec/ITESM campuses:
- Monterrey campus: The city of the mountains, considered the business capital of Mexico.
- Cuernavaca campus: The city of eternal spring.
- Guadalajara campus: The Pearl of the West.
- Mazatlán campus: An old town with unique cultural features and sandy beaches.
- Querétaro campus: Colonial splendor...cobblestone streets...pedestrian promenades.
- San Luis Potosí campus: A city rich in colonial architecture and history.
- Toluca campus: A provincial town with the magic of industrial progress.
Academic offerings
Tec/ITESM's academic programs include: Political Science and Business Administration (Accounting, International Business, Law, Economics, and Business Administration); Agriculture and Food Technology (Agronomy and Biochemistry); Science and Humanities (Communication Technology, International Relations, Computer Science); Medicine; and Architecture and Engineering (Civil Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture).
Academic notes: Tec/ITESM offers three different options of study for international students: Regular courses (taught both in Spanish and English), courses designed for international students (also in English and Spanish), or a combination of both. Please note that several campuses offer certificate programs that can be completed in one semester in International Business, Political Science, Latin American Studies, Communication and Culture, and others. For more information on academic programs, visit the website at left for the campus you wish to attend.
Language notes: You may take intensive Spanish classes at any level: beginner, intermediate or advanced, determined by a placement test. Students attending regular classes taught in Spanish must have advanced-level Spanish skills.
The exchange program
Students have the choice of attending any of the campuses (for regular classes taught in Spanish) or the seven campuses offering programs for foreigners (for intensive Spanish language, literature, and culture studies). The program length varies from six-week summer sessions to a semester or an academic year. Other special summer programs are shorter but are not included in the exchange. Students may apply directly to Tecnológico de Monterrey/ITESM for special programs.
Costs
For a semester or academic year, each ISU student pays a $300 program fee, tuition and fees at ISU, and room and board at the Tec/ITESM campus. Students can earn full academic transfer credit while remaining eligible for financial aid from ISU. Costs of the summer program include a $150 program fee, tuition and fees at ISU, and room and board at the Tec/ITESM campus. Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements.
