PUTZIER PRIZE:
This $500 merit-based award is named in honor of Matthew Putzier, an Ames native and ISU graduate. During his studies at ISU, Matthew participated in both the ISU-University of Wales, Swansea, exchange program and the ISU-Mandarin Training Center exchange in Taipei, Taiwan.

Matthew was a great proponent of study abroad and of full immersion in the host culture. He also understood the positive impact of semester and year-long programs, which offer the greatest potential for learning.

Matthew graduated from ISU in December 1994 with a B.B.A. in Marketing. The combination of a good academic record, international experience, and grounding in the Mandarin language held the promise of an excellent future. On January 20, 1995, Matthew was killed in a car accident in Ames. The Putzier Prize is given in honor of this young man to recognize the potential for study abroad to positively influence and shape the lives of young people.

The Putzier Prize is awarded annually in the Fall. It recognizes and assists U.S. undergraduate students studying in a non-Western culture at a university or college outside the U.S. where courses are taken with students from the host country. Credit earned while abroad must be applied toward an ISU degree. Applicants must be undergraduates and must study outside of Europe or Australia/New Zealand for at least 12 weeks.
